The Competition was founded in 1997. The founders are : Tbilisi City Hall, Ministry of Culture and Monuments Protection of Georgia and Tbilisi State Conservatoire.

The Competition is quadrennial, consists of 4 rounds and is open for all nationalities of 16-33 years. The competition is held under the auspices of the President of Georgia.

Since 2002 the Tbilisi International Piano Competition has been a member of the World Federation of International Competitions (WFIMC). The Federation was founded in 1957 and for today it includes 118 member-competitions from 36 countries among them 98 European competitions. The main goal of the Federation is establishing collaboration with all member-competitions, providing them assistance and support.

Georgian Pianist and Professor Manana Doidjashvili is the founder and artistic Director of Tbilisi International Piano Competition.
